LinkedIn Improve Your Visibility, Credibility, and Connect-Ability - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Are you on LinkedIn? This question has become more common in that past year, with total subscribers topping 200 million in early 2013 and the stock price doubling in the subsequent six months. As I note in Chapter 13 of Fast Track Your Job Search (and Career!), LinkedIn is the premier social networking site designed for business matters and is used by most Internet-savvy business people, regardless of generation. It is your number one web location for presenting your personal brand! Creating your  profile on LinkedIn is a first baby step. Many people create their profile, invite a few obvious friends, and then sit back and wait for invitations to come rolling in. This is the equivalent of designing a great billboard, locating it on a dirt road, and telling a handful of friends to drive by and take a look. If nothing ever happens, guess who is to blame? (Answer: You) To keep it simple (and this stuff is not as simple as it may look), you must focus on your visibility, credibility, and connect-ability. Lets examine how each of these factors will benefit you and some elementary actions you can take to improve your results. Your VISIBILITY is high if you are easily findable on LinkedIn. If a recruiter is searching for someone like you to fill a wonderful job at a company you would love to join, how readily can they find you? They could use a public search engine such as www.google.com. More and more, however, they  are looking for job candidates on LinkedIn and your visibility is determined by search results powered by the LinkedIn website proprietary search algorithm.  This algorithm is affected by the   contents (keywords, etc.) of your profile, the relevance of your profile contents to similar types of searchers (in this case, recruiters), and other uncertain factors. Here are my first three suggestions to improve your visibility: 1. Connect to a larger number of diverse users and join relevant LinkedIn groups. 2. Complete your profile rather than leave out sections and brand yourself effectively in your headline. 3. Insure that relevant keywords, phrases, and acronyms are appropriately used in your profile. Once someone finds your profile, will you appear CREDIBLE to them? It depends. Here are my first two suggestions for improving your credibility: 1. Obtain at least two effective recommendations of your work for each position you have held during the last 10 years. 2. As per the previous item #2, complete your profile with special attention to quantified accomplishments, certifications, and specialized training. If you are relatively visible and people generally find your profile credible, you have the equivalent of a well designed billboard placed on a fairly well-travelled road. But, will people read your billboard (profile) and reach out to you? Maybe, maybe not. This is why you need to improve your personal connection ability or what I term your CONNECT-ABILITY. I coined this term to emphasize the need for you to become a social animal on LinkedIn. You will gain orders of magnitude more positive career benefits if you develop strategies for reaching out to others, adding them to your network, and gaining information and support. If you posses strong social skills in the non-web world, with some study of LinkedIn etiquette you will be able to reap  rewards.  If you are reserved or socially unsophisticated, you wont. Whether you are adept at networking and connecting or not, improving your ability to reach out to others effectively through LinkedIn should be on your self-development list for 2014. This topic  is beyond the limits of this blog installment, so I hope to cover it in a separate post in the future. To summarize, LinkedIn is a phenomenal tool that can gain you valuable business connections and  calls from recruiters. Welcome Week Intern at The University of Manchester â€" Amy’s Story University of Manchester Careers Blog Amy, an International Management student at Manchester, spent the final three weeks of last summer as a Welcome Week Intern for the Alliance Manchester Business School, as part of the Student Experience Internship (SEI) programme. Amy recently joined us to talk us through various aspects of her SEI 2015 experience… Why SEI I applied to do an SEI because not many of the big companies accept first years for internships over the summer, whereas the SEI I applied for specifically wanted first year applicants. Ultimately, I applied as I knew it would help me gain relevant work experience. Interview experiences… I applied for the role by filling in an application form and then was invited to attend an interview. It was a panel interview with three staff members working in Undergraduate services at the business school. Although I hated the interview as I was very nervous, I’m glad there was an interview stage as I have never been in a formal interview before, and it’s nice now to have an experience to relate too especially because it went well! First few days… The first few days we were introduced to everyone in the office and wider colleagues within the school. It was also where I met the other intern I worked with throughout the whole SEI and it was genuinely really nice having a fellow AMBS student to work with throughout. Admittedly though during the first few days I found it quite tiring working full time, as we were kept busy with tasks including designing posters and making tickets for the welcome week bus tour. Main projects/tasks… We basically helped with any tasks Undergraduate services had to complete in the run up to Welcome Week and also during the week itself. In the run up there were a lot of admin tasks as well as design tasks like making leaflets, posters and tickets. In Welcome Week itself we attended the activities the school put on including a talk with alumni, setting up for a drinks reception and going on a bus tour. Favourite memories… There was a party at the end of Welcome Week on the final day of the internship which all the staff and fresher’s attended. It was nice to know that the week had gone smoothly and to relax as the three weeks were now over! Moving into second year how has it helped? My SEI experience will definitely help me when it comes to apply for other internships as I now have relevant office work related experience. It also made me realise I like designing things so I now try and be a lot more creative within the society work I do, often volunteering to design graphics. It’s an experience I would advise everyone to apply for; you gain valuable skills and get the chance to see a different perspective of the University as you see what it’s like to be an employee rather than a student! Don't use - especially in a statement that will appear at the top of the resume. It's like saying 'the way that I do things' and then doing it by saying 'my way of doing things.' You need to be consistent.Some people will say they only use adverbs that are true, but they only do it with a few qualifications. This doesn't mean that every single word you use in your resume is an adverb. However, the truth is that most words you use to describe yourself will be adverbs or adverbial adjectives.In fact, the majority of words you use, though not all of them, are adverbs, and should be used to describe you. These words are like the background of your resume.F or example, if you say you worked as a freelance journalist for several years, that's an adverb and an adjective for the word freelance. You will include that word in your resume; it's not necessary to use it as a verb. In doing that, the job seeker either has presented themselves as something un-needed, or they confuse the people they are talking to. Marketing yourself is critical to the success of your job search campaign. Therefore, understanding what your function is in different companies has to be discovered and understood. In case you havent noticed, companies have been forced to redesign themselves given the recent changes in the economic climate.Companies have laid off thousands of people whos roles were non-essential to the business. What happens when these companies find themselves on sturdier ground? They will want to hire. The hiring they do will not be direct replacement of those they let go.
